What is a Docent?

K-12 school visits are made possible by our generous and passionate volunteer docents. Anyone who enjoys art and working with kids can volunteer to lead tours as a museum docent!* Currently, there are NMU students, young professionals, and community members who assist in our education outreach.

The volunteer docent program is open to all, and the hours and scheduling are flexible. We provide training on how to look at and talk about art, as well as how to engage young viewers, facilitate discussion, and navigate the museum.

Contact Collections Curator, Sydney Sarasin, for application information at ssarasin@nmu.edu or 906-227-2136.
Volunteer as a Docent

*In order to comply with NMU’s Minors on Campus Policy (https://www.nmu.edu/minorsoncampus/) all volunteer applicants will be subject to a background check. After a successful check is complete, an individual will be allowed to volunteer to provide K-12 tours. Checks will be administered annually.
