Contemporary iterations of the still-life genre are presented through artworks manifesting impermanence, memory, slippages, familiarity, and the everyday. For nearly two years, we have experienced the still life – living in a time and space that is surreal, strange, familiar, edgy, and banal all at the same time. Searching for comfort in familiar things and feeling time pass, perhaps more slowly, we have looked in at ourselves and out at others from behind masks and through illuminated screens. We have learned to hold loved ones in our hearts and at a distance. Feeling the weight of our mortality has been difficult. Even though life is/was different, things keep moving along. After all, it is still life.
